The Dr. Barbara Heller Annual Lecture in Health Policy A Project of Tributes - Honor and Memorial Gifts

Twenty-five years ago, Barbara R. Heller, EdD, RN, FAAN, was appointed fourth Dean of the University of Maryland School of Nursing (UMSON), commencing 12 years of a successful transformation of UMSON into the State of Maryland's premier public institution for nursing education, research, and practice. During her tenure, UMSON appeared four consecutive times in the top ten rankings by US News & World Report. One of the earliest and perhaps most visibly evident symbols of Dr. Heller's accomplishments as Dean was the dedication of the new UMSON building, a $38 million state-of-the-art instructional and research facility.

Prior to becoming Dean of UMSON, Dr. Heller served on the School's faculty beginning in 1981, teaching and advising numerous students in the baccalaureate, master's, and doctoral programs. While on the faculty, she was instrumental in establishing the nation's first graduate program in informatics at UMSON; that specialty is now ranked #1 in the nation by US News and World Report.

This year, a quarter of a century after she began her tenure as Dean of UMSON, we are grateful for Dr. Heller's leadership, foresight, and determination, all of which positioned the School to meet future challenges. To celebrate this milestone and to honor her many accomplishments, we invite you to make a gift to support the Barbara R. Heller Annual Lecture in Health Policy. Our goal is to reach the $25,000 necessary to endow the lecture so that it can exist in perpetuity, providing educational experiences for many future generations of UMSON students, faculty, and friends.
